Christopher “Junior” Choong

Lt Col Christopher Ignetius Choong, call sign, “Junior” was born on 12 Feb 1963 in Malacca. Joined the Officer Cadet School in 1983 in Port Dickson for his Officer Cadet training and commissioned as a 2Lt into the Royal Ranger Regiment.  He was on active duty right from the beginning and participated in operations against the communist terrorist (CT) in the jungles of Perak, Pahang and the Malaysia-Thai border right until the surrender of arms by the CTs in Dec 1989.

“Junior” has held all the various post in the unit from a Platoon Commander, Assault Pioneer Commander, Intelligence Officer, Company Second-in-Command, Company Commander and Battalion Second-in-Command. He has spent most of his military career as an Instructor / Directing Staff at the Army Combat Training Center, Staff at Training and Doctrine (TRADOC), Staff Officer Training at the various HQ; Army HQ, Malaysian Armed Forces HQ as well as at the Joint Forces HQ. He is currently the Staff Officer Training at the Army HQ, Operations and Training Branch.  He is responsible to coordinate various training either collective or individual for both in-country as well as all bilateral and multilateral activities for the Malaysian Army.

Whilst at the Army Combat Training Center, “Junior” was the pioneer in setting up the Special Warfare Cell where he developed the Malaysian Operations in Built Up Areas as well as the Small Unit Operations doctrines.  He also developed the Malaysian Army, Military Appreciation Process (MAP) which is currently widely used throughout the Army.

“Junior” has attended various courses locally and abroad.  He attended the All Arms Assault Pioneer Instructors Course as well as the Demolitions Course in New Zealand.  He was at the National Defence University in Washington, D.C. to attend the Combating Terrorism Fellows Course.  In 1998 he attended the Malaysian Armed Forces Staff College and in 2001 attended the Royal Thai Army, Command and General Staff College, Bangkok, Thailand.  He has a Masters of Arts in Management from the University of Malaya.

Being an outdoor enthusiast, “Junior” teamed up with an outdoor training provider, TransEdventure Pte Ltd and currently is the senior facilitator.  He facilitates programs for teambuilding, leadership and management for corporate companies, colleges and schools.

“Junior” is an avid writer and contributes most of his writings to the Malaysian Army journal, SOROTAN DARAT.  He writes on Military Strategy, Military History, Management and Leadership and Cyber Security.

“Junior” has been awarded several honours and medals from his Majesty the King: Defender of the Realm; Knight Officer; Distinguish Conduct Medal; Malaysian Service Medal (Emergency); Loyal Service Medal and General Service Medal.
