Lieutenant Colonel Pedro Almeida Duarte was born on July 11, 1964 in Sintra, Portugal. He is a graduate of the Academia Militar (Portuguese Army Military Academy) and the Instituto de Altos Estudos Militares (Portuguese Army War College).
On completion of the Military Academy (1984-89), he was assigned to the Infantry School in Mafra where he served as a Platoon Commander and Instructor.
In 1990, he was assigned to the Portuguese Army Sports and Physical Fitness Center (1990-96) where he served as an Instructor, Platoon Commander and Headquarters Company Commander.
From 1996 – 2000 he attended the Staff Course at the War College followed by a Masters in Physical Fitness at the Faculdade de Motricidade Humana (Human Motricity University).
He graduated from the Command and General Staff Course at the Portuguese Army War College which he attended from 2000 to 2002.
In 2002 he joined the NH90 NATO helicopter program as the Portuguese Army program manager and military assistant to the National Armament Director.
In December 2004 he was assigned to Joint Command Lisbon J4 Division as the Multinational Joint Logistic Center staff officer in the Movement & Transportation cell. The highlight during this period was involvement in the development and introduction of the NATO Response Forces (NRF) Joint Logistic Support Group (JLSG) concept and the Full Operational Capability (FOC) certification of the NRF concept.
During this assignment, he was involved in two NRF operations, the first in support of the USA after Hurricane Katrina and the second following the 2005 earthquake in Pakistan.
This was followed in October 2007 by a further NATO assignment at SHAPE Operational Preparation Directorate where, as Intel Subject Matter Expert, he was involved in the evaluation of six NRF rotations through participation in several joint exercises.
LTC Duarte also took part in the implementation and certification of the Deployable Joint Staff Element (DJSE) concept as well as in the development of several NATO publications related to joint evaluation.
In October 2010 he returned to Joint Command Lisbon where he got the assignment as Exercise and Preparation Support Section Head in the Exercise and Preparation Branch. His duties included the branch overall coordination, exercise planning and MEL/MIL development.
Currently, LTC Duarte is Operations Section Head in the G3 branch at HQ Allied Rapid Reaction Corps, in Innsworth (UK), position that he took from August 2011 (until July 2014), and where he is also Portugal´s Senior National Representative. His present role principal duties include leading, directing and coordinating current operations in the Combined Joint Operations Center (CJOC) as well as being responsible for all training activities.
Lieutenant Colonel Pedro Almeida Duarte is married and has two daughters. His interests include aviation, military history, art, travelling, motorsports and he is an avid collector of model cars from the renowned 24 Hours of Le Mans race.
